Join other club members for a lovely ride in the Ace Basin just a ways south of Charleston along Savannah Highway (Hwy 17). This traditional Coastal Cyclists ride features 34 miles through the woods and across rivers from Hwy 17 to Bear Island. There’s almost no traffic and the scenery is excellent. Every now and then you get to see alligators. On occasion we’ve seen eagles and osprey, too.
Date: Tuesday, Jan 1st, 2019
Time: 9:00 AM
Place: 9446 Ace Basic Parkway, Green Pond, SC Just behind the old Wood Bros Grocery or the Ashepoo Grocery. I’m not sure if the old Wood Bros building is still there, but Ashepoo Grocery is.
Directions: Head south from Charleston on Highway 17. From the intersection of I-526 and Hwy 17 it is almost exactly 33 miles, so allow plenty of time to get there.
Google maps shows the address as 9446 Ace Basic Parkway, Green Pond, SC. At that point, Fire House Road is on your left. Park along Fire House Road – completely off the road. If you pass Ashepoo Grocery, you’ve gone too far. Fire House Road is just on the other side and you can turn beside the store to find it.
From Fire House Road we’ll ride a short way back up Hwy 17 toward Charleston (there’s a good shoulder) and turn right on Bennetts Point Road. From there we have no more turns and no traffic until we get to the little store and shrimp boat dock close to Bear Island Wildlife Management Area.
NOTE: The store may not be open at Bear Island, so bring your own snacks and plenty of water.
